2-DAY WORKSHOP

Publishing: Everything You Need To Know with Michelle Dunn Marsh and Dan Milnor.

Thursday, May 9th, 11:10am – 5:00pm

Friday, May 10th, 9:00am – 4:00pm

PSPF has made a commitment to photography in book form throughout its existence. It is proud to present this year a two-day workshop led by a seasoned publishing professional, and one of the most prolific artist book-makers working today. Realizing your work in book form is a dream for many photographers. As the publishing and printing landscapes evolve, this comprehensive two-day dive will give you everything you need to know about options today.

Day One with Michelle Dunn Marsh:  An introduction to the photobook, from monograph to catalog to limited-edition, and what each subset means. Discussion of sequencing, editing (selection of photographs and of text), book design, printing, and the elusive and changing marketplace. Discussions about concept, physicality, sequencing, materials, quantities will inform and transform how you think about presentation of your own work. Day One concludes with the Book Publishing Seminar, a panel with booksellers, distributors and editors discussing the field (FREE to members of this class).

Day Two with Dan MilnorHear from a photographer bibliophile who has created over 200 printed publications of his own work, and, as the Creative Evangelist of Blurb, Inc., sees and facilitates inspiring uses of bookmaking and print-on-demand access to bring the form of the printed page to a much broader audience.

BIOGRAPHIES

Michelle Dunn Marsh is the co-founder and publisher of Minor Matters Books. She has been in senior design, editorial, and administrative roles in non-profit and commercial art book publishing over the last twenty-five years, including positions with Aperture Foundation, Chronicle Books, and as a freelancer or consultant with countless museums, publishers, and university presses. She is an award-winning designer, holds an MS in Publishing from Pace University in New York City, and recently curated “By The Book,” an exhibition of books by some of the most significant American photobook designers of the twentieth century. She has been involved with nearly 200 traditionally-published photography books with authors including Carrie Mae Weems, Jock Sturges, Jim Marshall, Paul Strand, and other luminaries in the history of photography.

Daniel Milnor’s day job is as “Creative Evangelist,” for Blurb Inc., the world’s premiere indie publishing platform.  A compulsive journal-keeper, he believes in the power of print, taking one’s time, slowing down, reading paper books, casting off the shackles of social media and talking to one’s neighbors if you really want to know what is going on in the world. Dan, a talented old-school Leica-wielding silver photographer, is expert at making books, having created a non-stop stream of close to 100 individual artist’s books and magazines. He is totally conversant in the many ways photographers can exploit both hand made and machine made books, complete with audio-visual files (rich media). He dreams of downsizing, writing something memorable and living somewhere in Latin America.
