“The sequential images of American photographer Duane Michals address literary and philosophical ideas about death, gender, and sexuality.”

This class is a game-changer, a rare opportunity to spend three 1/2 days with one of our modern masters – a world-renowned signature style photographer who has had influenced generations of young artists. You will leave this class a changed person, as well as a changed photographer. Your vision will have evolved. Duane likes to call this a “show and tell” experience. He will discuss his work, his career and his process. Attendees will have the unique chance to show their work and get Duane’s powerful input. He will help you solidify your ideas and elucidate the road ahead. Attendees will make photographs, participate in group critiques and discussions. This will be an experience that will stay with you and inform you for years to come.

Duane was last at the Palm Springs Photo Festival in 2014. We still receive letters testifying to the long-reaching effects of having been a participant in this course.

Born in 1932,American photographer Duane Michals was born into a steelworker’s family in McKeesport, near Pittsburgh. He studied art at the University of Denver and the Parsons School of Design in New York and became an assistant art director for Dance Magazine. Self-taught as a photographer, he has worked commercially for many magazines, including Look, Mademoiselle, Esquire, and Vogue. Michals was strongly influenced by Magritte and other Surrealists early in his career and is considered one of the major innovators of the photographic art world. He has explored the use of photographic sequencing as a way of illustrating wide-ranging metaphysical questions such as existence and non-existence, death and rebirth, desire and rejection. He has also produced memorable erotic work. Most of his images have been shot in black-and-white using natural light, but he often creates settings and situations, manipulates exposure, combines multiple negatives, and paints on his images with colour. He was an early practitioner of writing on the photographic prints themselves and also often accompanies his photos with text panels. As a portraitist, he has photographed a considerable number of the well-known artists and actors of the 20th century, many of them his close friends. Continually working between appearance and reality, and understanding the power of the camera to act as a kind of referee on that playing field, Michals has said, somewhat whimsically, ‘I am a reflection photographing other reflections within a reflection. To photograph reality is to photograph nothing.’

Price: $1630

BIOGRAPHY

Duane Michals He had no formal training but recognized his photographic aptitude when he took his first pictures as a tourist in the USSR in 1958. By 1960 he was earning his living through commercial work, including portraiture and fashion photography. In 1964, weary of the demands of photographing people, Michals responded to Eugene Atget’s pictures of depopulated Paris with his own views of empty New York shop interiors, which seemed to him like stage sets waiting to be animated. In 1966 he began to produce his famous sequences depicting enigmatic encounters in a static setting as if in the frames of a film (first published in Sequences, New York, 1970). These were inspired by the erotically charged domestic dramas painted by Balthus, whose canvas The Street (1933; New York, MOMA) served as the model for Michals’s first staged photograph. In order to accommodate the increasing elaboration of his narratives and often metaphysical themes, Michals began to write on the surfaces of such photographs in Real Dreams, published in 1977).
